The Perfect (Healthier) Thanksgiving Gravy

No Thanksgiving feast is complete without rich, flavourful gravy—poured over everything from roasted veggies to mashed potatoes. This version keeps all the comfort while using cleaner, better-for-you ingredients. It’s naturally thickened, lower in fat, and can be made vegan or traditional—so everyone around the table can enjoy it guilt-free.

Directions:

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, warm the oil. Add onion and sauté for 5–7 minutes, until soft and golden.
  2. Stir in garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
  3. Sprinkle in the flour or arrowroot and whisk for 1 minute to form a roux.
  4. Slowly whisk in the broth, stirring constantly until smooth.
  5. Add tamari, mustard, vinegar, thyme, and sage. Simmer for 8–10 minutes until thickened.
  6. For a smoother texture, blend with an immersion blender. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  7. Serve warm over your Thanksgiving favourites—or freeze leftovers for the next Sunday dinner.

Tip: For a vegan version, use veggie broth and olive oil. For extra richness, stir in a splash of oat cream or cashew cream before serving.
