Prostate Cancer
A slow growing cancer, prostate cancers arise in the rear portion of the prostate gland. The prostate gland is a walnut sized gland at the base of the man’s bladder that encircles the urethra. The cancer is undetectable with a prostate exam as symptoms are minimal. However, an exam will reveal if the prostate is enlarged, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and this will encourage further testing. Every man should have annual exams beginning at age 40.
Symptoms May Include:
- Pain or burning sensation while urinating
- Frequent urination
- Decrease in size & force of urine flow
- Continuing lower back, pelvic or supra-pubic discomfort
Note: The prostate cancer itself often
causes no symptoms until it has
reached advanced stages. Symptoms
are usually caused by the BPH.
