Hi Nature’s Fare and Followers of the “8 Weeks to Wellness” Challenge!
I started my journey to wellness on Tuesday January 24th. I began my morning with the Morning Rise and Shine and the Blueberry Greens… what a great way to start a morning! I was secretly dreading how the two would taste together but they were actually a PLEASURE to drink!! I have been following the cleansing and diet directions as closely as possible and I feel great. I didn’t actually notice how much more energy I had until my boyfriend pointed it out. He commented on how much energy I still had at the end of a long work day (11 hours) and how I’d usually be exhausted by that time, however instead of lounging around on the couch, I was working out! I also noticed that I’ve been sleeping better and just feeling all around better throughout the day. I have no “3 o’clock” slump and even managed to get up earlier than I typically would every...

Happy 2012 everyone! What resolutions have you made this year? Many of us start the year with the best of intentions. We can see the person we want to be (fitter, more energy, a healthy glow) and the path to get there (eat better, exercise regularly, reduce stress)…but frequently we get sidetracked. Why? Because change is hard! Changing our everyday habits can seem very overwhelming, especially at the very beginning. There are many obstacles that can stand in front of us, and the one I hear all the time is, “I want to change my diet, but my husband/wife/partner/family keep pulling me off track”. Sorry, that’s no excuse. Creating a healthy diet doesn’t need to be difficult and it isn’t something you are “on” for a few weeks at a time. Let’s just throw away the word “diet” – eating healthy is a way of life, and you CAN work around your family’s eating habits!
How? Try this:
- Stop thinking your diet is either on or off, black or white – A healthy lifestyle lives in the “grey”, it doesn’t need to be 100% perfect to be healthy. A treat in the morning is no excuse to eat junk food all day!
- Change the meals you eat alone FIRST! – Dinner (the meal...

The Calcium Conundrum
By Kate Rhéaume-Bleue, N.D.
Are you taking calcium or vitamin D to keep your bones strong? If so, I’ve got some good news and some bad news for you. Let’s dispense with the bad news right away. In April 2011 nutrition researchers showed – for the third time – that women who take calcium supplements, with or without vitamin D, experience about 20% more heart attacks and strokes than women who don’t take calcium. Ugh. Millions of women take these supplements because they are proven to increase bone mineral density and lower osteoporosis and hip fracture risk. However, it seems that a portion of the added calcium that doesn’t reach our bones winds up clogging arteries, leading to heart disease. That’s the bad news.
The good news is that other research has recently identified a nutrient that can safely guide calcium into bones and teeth, where we need it, while keeping the mineral out of arteries, and even clear away pre-existing arterial calcium deposits. This is the action of vitamin K2, a long misunderstood fat-soluble vitamin that works with vitamin D to put calcium in its place. If you are concerned about bone health, heart health, fertility, children’s health or just being healthy in general, understanding vitamin K2 provides a key piece to the nutritional puzzle of many health concerns. Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox: How A Little Known Vitamin Could Save Your Life (Wiley & Sons, 2012) is the first complete guide to a new essential nutrient that was overlooked...
Mind Management – Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking ability. Eventually it even takes away the ability to perform the simplest tasks. At this point in time, scientists do not know the exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease or how to stop its progression. They have, however, discerned that Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging, affects both men and women, is more common in people as they age, and is not caused by hardening of the arteries or stress.
Tips to Maintain Brain Health:
Regular Exercise: According to the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Center, physical activity can reduce your rate of developing Alzheimer’s by up to fifty percent. Regular exercise can also help to slow deterioration for those who have started to develop cognitive problems. Healthy Diet: Focus on eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats. Try following a diet that is rich in fish, nuts, whole grains, olive oil, and abundant fresh produce. As a treat, drink a glass of red wine or eat a square or two of dark chocolate. Avoid in-taking trans and saturated fats and instead choose healthy fats like omega 3s and omega 6s. There is some evidence that suggests that omega 3 fatty acids may help to prevent Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Omega 3s are found in fish like salmon, trout, cod, mackerel and sardines, and can be easily supplemented with a cold water fish oil, like Cod Liver Oil. Emphasize eating across the rainbow....

Five Tips For Talking To Your Children About Climate Change
Climate change is a topic that is forefront on many environmentally aware minds, including those of your children. Naturally, kids are going to have questions, and they may wonder how or why climate changes are happening. It is important to educate your children about global warming in a way that will make them aware without causing them to feel upset. The truth is that the younger generations will be the ones who will have to react to the changing climate and find ways to reverse the effects of climate change on our environment.
1. Be age appropriate. Young children might not be ready for the negative details so instead, focus on instilling a love of and stewardship for the environment by encouraging outside play and the three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) in your home. When talking to older elementary students, use that same stewardship as a jumping off point for talking about how our actions impact the climate, and how climate change will impact life on the planet. Take action as a family, and spend time together outside. Pre-teens and teens are more likely to be able to understand the global effects of climate change. They’re also capable of more extensive dialogue on the subject and activism on the issue if it is something they feel passionate about. Show your adolescent the myriad of ways people are acting on behalf of the environment and encourage them to investigate further, and to make a difference by writing letters, changing their actions, or...
Life-Long Health: Getting to the Root of the Matter By Brendan Brazier
The demands on our time and bodies are greater than they have ever been, be it from overwork, extracurricular activities, environmental factors, lack of sleep, or poor nutrition. This has led to an increase in cancer, disease, premature aging, allergies and inability to cope with the various forms of stress that surround us. It is becoming common practice to treat health concerns and ailments with a quick fix, be it through supplements or medications, rather than dealing with the root causes or adopting appropriate practices for true longterm health. The word health is thrown around quite freely these days. If we all had a high level of health, we would all be at our ideal body weight, none of us would have food cravings, we would all sleep soundly, we wouldn’t rely on stimulating foods to give us energy, and we would be able to think more clearly and rationally. Yet, few of us are in this situation. One of the reasons is because we often treat the symptoms of each ailment as it crops up, while ignoring its cause. The reality is we all have the ability to take our health into our own hands and by doing so live a high-energy, sicknessfree, rewarding life.
Diet over Symptom Treating The key to long term results is getting to the root of the matter. Symptom-treating programs have risen in popularity over the past several years because of the speed at which results can be seen, and treating symptoms has become the accepted...
