I am suffering with high blood pressure, heart palpitations, muscle pain, restless legs and twitchy eyelids? Help! by Lorna Vanderhaeghe

Magnesium deficiency is related to all the symptoms you are suffering from. Over 82 percent of Canadians are magnesium deficient and simply adding a magnesium supplement can reverse so many health concerns that you will often hear magnesium called the “miracle mineral.” It is challenging to get magnesium from our food because it has been removed from our grains and our water supply. Magnesium is so important that we should all be taking a magnesium supplement every day. The best form is magnesium glycinate because, unlike many common forms of magnesium, it is the only magnesium that crosses the blood brain barrier, helping those with depression, migraines and anxiety, and it does not cause explosive diarrhea when taken in effective doses. Magsmart a delicious citrus flavoured powdered formula containing magnesium glycinate will calm restless legs, soothe muscle pain, stop heart palpitations, normalize blood pressure and aid restful sleep. Magsmart also contains malic acid to control the pain of fibromyalgia and it provides taurine and other nutrients important for optimal heart health. Take one to two scoops of Magsmart at bedtime to improve sleep and to stop anxiety and restless legs. Every woman taking the birth control pill or on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) also needs magnesium glycinate as synthetic hormones deplete the body of magnesium, increasing the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease. Remember, every time you drink a cup of a caffeinated beverage, you also lose magnesium from the body so if you love coffee, you need magnesium too. Nothing works faster...

The Facts on Vitamin D

What is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that has properties of both a vitamin and a hormone. There are several forms of vitamin D, the primary ones being vitamin D2 and D3. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) comes from food sources while vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is created in the skin in response to exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Vitamin D3 is considered the natural form of vitamin D and is the most active.

A unique aspect of vitamin D is that it functions like a hormone and is often referred to as one. It targets organs such as the kidneys, intestines, brain, pancreas, skin, bones, reproductive organs, and some cancer cells.

What Foods Contain Vitamin D?

Foods containing vitamin D include fish liver oils, fatty saltwater fish, dairy products, and eggs. Small amounts of vitamin D are also contained in fortified foods such as fortified milk, orange juice and cereals. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to get adequate amounts of vitamin D from food.

Other Sources of Vitamin D

  1. Sunlight and UVB Exposure. Sun exposure and not dietary intake is the principal source of circulating vitamin D stores in the body.
  2. Supplements. Most multivitamin and mineral supplements, along with a range of other nutritional supplements contain vitamin D.

Health Benefits of Vitamin D

  • Bone Health/ Osteoporosis. Both calcium and phosphorous are important for bones, however, when vitamin D levels are low, absorption of both these minerals is significantly reduced. For example, studies have shown that low vitamin D levels result in absorption of only 10 to 15 percent...

Five foods for healthy skin by Tara Gree

Although the cosmetic industry would have us believe otherwise, beautiful skin doesn’t come from a jar full of perfumed chemicals. Beyond being born with great genes, the best thing you can do for your skin is to eat a healthy diet. Learn how to enhance your skin from the inside out by eating foods that will make your epidermis glow with health. Try adding these foods to your diet to both feel and look better. Chia Seeds: Chia offers a multitude of health benefits. The word chia derives from the Aztec word for oily. Chia seeds offer high levels of omega-3 acids which the human body needs but cannot produce and which only come from a few dietary sources.

Without omega-3’s, people can suffer from poor circulation and dry skin, as well as heart problems, fatigue, depression and a feeling of mental fogginess. Chia seeds help keep skin (and the rest of the body) hydrated because they are hydrophilic, absorbing more than 10 times their weight in water. You can sprinkle chia seeds in your hot cereal, add a teaspoon of the tiny seeds to a glass of juice, or add a few to add extra texture to a salad or vegetable hot dish.

Almonds: These nuts are an excellent source of vitamin E which helps minimize the negative effects of sun exposure on the skin, as well as aiding against certain types of skin cancer. They also provide a quick source of strength and energy, providing fuel for exercise which also benefits...
