Spending Time in Nature Makes People Feel More Alive

ScienceDaily (June 4, 2010) Feeling sluggish? The solution may require getting outside the box — that big brick-and-mortar box called a building.

Being outside in nature makes people feel more alive, finds a series of studies published in the June 2010 issue of the Journal of Environmental Psychology. And that sense of increased vitality exists above and beyond the energizing effects of physical activity and social interaction that are often associated with our forays into the natural world, the studies show.

“Nature is fuel for the soul, ” says Richard Ryan, lead author and a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester. “Often when we feel depleted we reach for a cup of coffee, but research suggests a better way to get energized is to connect with nature,” he says.

The findings, adds Ryan, are important for both mental and physical health. “Research has shown that people with a greater sense of vitality don’t just have more energy for things they want to do, they are also more resilient to physical illnesses. One of the pathways to health may be to spend more time in natural settings,” says Ryan.

In recent years, numerous experimental psychology studies have linked exposure to nature with increased energy and heightened sense of well-being. For example, research has shown that people on wilderness excursions report feeling more alive and that just recalling outdoor experiences increases feelings of happiness and health. Other studies suggest that the very presence of nature helps to ward off feelings of exhaustion and that 90...

New Research Finds Vitamin C Inhibits Tumor Growth

Vitamin C is essential for immune system health and for the production of cartilage and collagen production, but it is only recently that research has shed light on the integral role this nutrient plays in inhibiting cancer cell growth and in cancer cell disintegration. While scientists have long known the chemical process that takes place once Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is consumed in the body, they are only just beginning to understand how this process can help those battling cancer.

Vitamin C becomes peroxide once it enters our cells. Normal, healthy cells have the ability to process the peroxide and eliminate it by breaking it down into its singular chemical forms; however, cancer cells do not have this ability and therefore the introduction of Vitamin C into cancer cells causes cellular breakdown and death. In August of 2009 the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institute of Health published the findings of Yeom CH, Lee G’s research on the affects of ascorbic acid in inhibiting tumor growth in BALC/C mice implanted with sarcoma.  The study proved that the injection of high doses of Vitamin C effectively blocked Angiogenesis (the process of sprouting new blood vessels into the tumor) which increases tumor growth. Without new blood vessels the tumor is unable to grow and will eventually die.

Research on Vitamin C treatment started over 30 years ago with Campbell and Pauling. Their studies, and many like them, including human clinical trials and the research mentioned above, are proving that vitamin C is crucial...

Feeling Hot Hot Hot with Bikram Yoga!

BikramBannerImage

“The most exciting, hard-working, effective, amusing and glamorous Yoga class in the world. Sweat, strain, laugh, and do more for your health, body, and general well-being than you ever imagined possible.”

Bikram Yoga is a carefully and intelligently crafted series of twenty-six postures (asanas) and two breathing exercises that works the entire body from the inside out in a ninety minute workout. Performed in a room heated to 105 degrees and carrying a humidity level of 40%, Bikram Yoga is scientifically designed so that each pose prepares the body for the next, making it very safe and allowing the body to go more deeply into each pose. The heat facilitates stretching, prevents injury, and promotes sweating which aids detoxification and fat burning. Bikram Yoga is ideal for all exercise levels and for all ages, and as Bikram himself says, “It’s never too late, it’s never too bad, and you’re never too old or too sick to start from scratch once again.”

As well as providing the biggest challenge, the heat factor of Bikram Yoga provides many of the disciplines’ benefits:

• Heavy sweating helps detoxify the body • As the blood thins, the circulatory system is cleared • The output of cells which fight infection is increased • The heart rate is elevated • Weight loss is made easier because your muscles are warmed

Try Bikram Yoga at Dionne & Adam’s new studio in Vernon on 29 St. next to Little Tex. Their introductory pass allows you to take two classes within five days for...

Daily Multivitamins to Keep Heart Attacks Away: supplement tips for cardio care.

In an effort to prevent against heart disease, diet alone is often not enough. Adding a range of supplements, including a multivitamin and essential fatty acids from fish oil, to a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fibers, is a proactive approach to preventing one of the biggest killers in North America.

Recent research supports the efficacy of one-a-day multivitamins in the prevention of heart attack. According to a new study published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, women who took a one-a-day supplement were 40 per cent less likely to suffer a heart attack than their peers who didn’t use multivitamins.

A Continuing Nurses’ Health Study reported that regular multivitamin use was linked with a 24 per cent lower risk of heart disease. In a study of more than one million healthy U.S. adults, multivitamins were associated with a 25 per cent lower risk of dying from heart disease.

Another current study included 33,933 Swedish women aged 49 to 83 years, the vast majority (93 per cent) having no history of heart disease. After 10 years of follow up, 1201 women had suffered a heart attack. Among women who were free of heart disease upon enrolling in the study, taking a daily multivitamin reduced the risk of heart attack by 27 per cent. The protective effect was stronger among women who used multivitamins for at least five years. Compared with women who didn’t take supplements, those who took multivitamins for five years or longer were 40 per cent less...

Finding Balance Through Thought and Yoga

In today’s world multitasking is not a talent, it is a survival method. Even as you read this I am sure your phone with ring, an email will pop up, maybe you are hearing “mom, mom, mom” in your ear, all while thinking about what you have to do next. We have lost touch with what true balance is, what being grounded and aware of ourselves and bodies feels like, adjusting our normal to fit into our lifestyles. Then we wonder why are tired, get sick, relationships start to be affected and things seem to go wrong. If we are not in balance, everything else around us starts to slip. Yoga is often thought of as merely exercise, but in reality is a lifestyle, one that when followed helps keep us balanced and back to who we are, not what we are expected to be.

The following is from the teaching of Deepak Chopra, and can work as a step by step guide to living life and attracting balance in ourselves and environments.

Chopra: The word yoga is the same as the English word “yoke”. It means “union”–Union of the body, mind and the spirit as one continuum of consciousness.

Spirituality is experiential. And classically in India, it is taught through yoga. But most people have a misunderstanding of yoga. They equate it with the physical postures that they do in the yoga studio, which are one component of yoga. But yoga classically is divided into four types. And they have to do...

Obesity in North America: Are Factory Farms, Big Pharma and Big Food to Blame?

Dr. Mark Hyman MP

One third of our economy thrives on making people sick and fat. Big Farming grows 500 more calories per person per day than 25 years ago because they get paid to grow extra food even when it is not needed. The extra corn (sugar) and soy (fat) are turned into industrial processed food and sugar-sweetened beverages — combinations of fat, sugar and salt that are proven to be addictive. These subsidized ($288 billion) cheap, low-quality foods are heavily marketed ($30 billion) and consumed by our ever-widening population with an obesity rate approaching three out of four Americans. The more they eat, the fatter they become. The fatter they become the more they develop heart disease, diabetes, cancer and a myriad of other chronic ailments.

Big Food, Farming And Pharma: How They Are Killing Us

The default condition of a human being in the 21st century is to be obese. Nearly 75 percent of Americans are overweight. This is not an accident. Specific, traceable forms of structural violence promoted by Big Food, Big Farming, Big Pharma and government polices is leading to the global spread of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Current food policies and subsidies encourage Big Farming to overproduce corn and soy which are then used to create sugary, fatty, factory-made, industrial food products sold as processed, fast, or junk food as I noted above. The government essentially stands in line next to you in fast food chains helping you buy cheeseburgers, fries, and cola. But in the...
