Serrapeptase: A Natural Anti-Inflammatory
Vitamins
Serrapeptase, also known as Serratia Peptidase, is a proteolytic enzyme isolated from the non-pathogenic enterobacteria Serratia E15. When consumed in unprotected tablets or capsules, the enzyme is destroyed by acid in the stomach. However, our special enteric-coated Caplets enable the enzyme to pass through the stomach unchanged, and be absorbed in the intestine. Serrapeptase is found in negligible amounts in the urine, suggesting that it is transported directly from the intestine into the bloodstream.
Clinical studies show that Serrapeptase induces fibrinolytic, anti-inflammatory and anti-edemic (prevents swelling and fluid retention) activity in a number of tissues, and that its anti-inflammatory effects are superior to other proteolytic enzymes.
Besides reducing inflammation, one of Serrapeptase’s most profound benefits is reduction of pain, due to its ability to block the release of pain-inducing amines from inflamed tissues. Physicians throughout Asia and Europe have recognized the anti-inflammatory and pain-blocking benefits of this naturally occurring substance and are using it in treatment as an alternative to salicylates, ibuprofen and other NSAIDs.
In Germany and other European countries, Serrapeptase is a common treatment for inflammatory and traumatic swellings, and much of the research that exists on this substance is of European origin. One double-blind study was conducted by German researchers to determine the effect of Serrapeptase on post-operative swelling and pain. This study involved sixty-six patients who were treated surgically for fresh rupture of the lateral collateral ligament of the knee. On the third post-operative day, the group receiving Serrapeptase exhibited a 50 percent reduction of swelling, compared to the controls....

Canada’s First Holistic Pharmacist Brings Hormonal Health Insight to Okanagan Women
By Prairie Naturals
Dated: Sep 14, 2010
RoseMarie Pierce, B.Sc. Pharm, begins a 3-day tour September 23 to educate women about the importance of balanced body pH for hormonal health. Dates are scheduled at six health food stores throughout BC’s Okanagan. Events are free of charge.
A passionate advocate for natural methods, holistic pharmacist RoseMarie Pierce creates well-balanced “prescriptions” for good health that include diet, lifestyle, nutritional supplements, exercise and attitude. Adding medications when necessary is an option for Pierce, but she believes many health problems can and should be corrected simply through the way we live our daily lives.
Using her pharmaceutical and nutritional expertise, RoseMarie has researched and formulated her own line of nutritional supplements with a special focus on pH balancing. Her foremost product, Morning Rise & Shine™, is an organic lemon and aloe drink mix containing alkalizing minerals that helps to balance internal pH.
On the topic of acid alkaline balance, she advises – “Medical science and pharmacology are just beginning to recognize that to live a healthy life we need to adjust our body’s pH to be more alkaline. Most women and men, for that matter – are perpetually over-acid. This chronic acid state creates an internal environment that promotes many preventable diseases including osteoporosis, arthritis, hormonal problems, indigestion and even cancer.”
After earning her degree in Pharmacy from Dalhousie University in 1972, RoseMarie integrated her pharmaceutical education with her extensive studies in herbal medicine and went on to become Canada’s very first Holistic Pharmacist.
RoseMarie is the senior technical advisor, educator...
Okanagan Charity Trucks
Program Connecting Companies To Causes Will Increase Services to Those in Need In the Okanagan Region A Vancouver businessman concerned with how non-profits, and the communities they serve, will weather the current fiscal storm has come up with an ingenious way to help out. Founded in 2008, Charity Trucks is the brainchild of Bill McIntosh, 52, who saw a unique way to unite charities and companies with a win-win solution: “Some national organizations are spending up to $4 million annually on their fleet of trucks used to pick up and deliver donated goods – can you imagine what a difference it would make if that money could be spent on programs for our communities?” But who would fund this fleet of trucks? “I knew”, said McIntosh, “that the same financial pressures that are cutting donations, are forcing companies to get inventive in their marketing.” McIntosh saw a great opportunity for meaningful mobile marketing. “Getting their brand on our trucks lets companies save on advertising while making a meaningful connection with their community. Meanwhile, a charity gets free trucks and puts the savings back into essential programs.” Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Okanagan depends on their Renew Crew to generate 35% of their annual budget. “Working with Charity Trucks will dramatically increase the number of children and families we can serve,” says Lisa Hobson, Executive Director. “With more struggling families needing our program and a tough fundraising climate, the opportunity Charity Trucks offers is truly amazing.” Natures Fare and Touchpoint...
Goji Berry – The Happy Berry
Known for thousands of years in Asia as “The Happy Berry,” Goji is perhaps the most nutritionally-rich fruit on the planet. Packed with antioxidants, amino acids, omega fatty acids, and trace minerals, the Goji Berry has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 3,000 years and has recently gained notoriety as a superfood in Canada and other Western countries. Goji’s purported benefits are numerous, ranging from healthy energy levels, healthy blood pressure, healthy aging and immune system function, healthy libido and mood, healthy eyes, and healthy liver function. The Goji Berry is so revered in Central Asia as an anti-aging and strength-building nutritional powerhouse that Tibetan monks traditionally honour it for a two week celebration at the end of each year. The famed Li Qing Yuen, who apparently lived to the age of 252 years (1678-1930) and who’s life is the most well-documented case of extreme longevity ever known, consumed large amounts of Goji Berries each day.
Goji Berry Antioxidants
Goji Berries contain the complete spectrum of food antioxidant carotenoids, including beta carotene (a source even better than carrots) and zeaxanthin (which supports the eyes) and are the richest sources of carotenoids of all known foods. In fact, Goji Berries contain 500 times more Vitamin C by weight than oranges, making them the second only to the Camu Camu Berry as the highest source of Vitamin C on earth. With an ORAC measurement of 25,300 ORAC units per 100 grams, Goji Berries demonstrate ten times the antioxidant power of blueberries (2,400)...
Glutathione – The Master Antioxidant
A Biology Lesson – The Telomere
The human body is made up of 100 trillion cells. According to one theory, you age because your cells age, and therefore, if you can control the aging process in your cells, you can control the aging of your body. Each cell in your body contains a nucleus, which in turn contains the chromosomes that contain your genes. The chromosome is made up of two “arms”, each of which contains a single molecule DNA. This molecule is essentially a string of beads made up of units called bases, and there are about 100 million bases in each DNA molecule. At the tip of each chromosome lies the telomere, which many doctors believe is the key to altering the human aging process as we know it. A telomere is about 15,000 bases long at the moment of conception in the womb, but immediately begins to shorten each time your cell divides. Once your telomeres have been reduced to approximately 5,000 bases, you essentially die of old age. So far, scientists have discovered that the telomere shortening process can be accelerated by unhealthy lifestyle choices such as lack of exercise, smoking, stress, and obesity.
Interestingly, our reproductive cells do not age (their telomeres do not shorten like all other cells in our bodies). This is due to an enzyme called telomerase. All of our cells have the ability to produce telomerase, but the gene for telomerase production is turned “off” in our non-reproductive cells. Scientists are now racing to find...

GMO Foods – Genetically Modified Organisms
Going Organic
The use of genetically engineered organisms is prohibited under organic food standards. Organic foods are grown without the use of synthetic chemicals or irradiation. GE livestock feed is also prohibited. The best way to avoid GE foods is to purchase 100 per cent Certified Organic products, whole foods, and fresh produce.
Recent polls across the world have shown that, if they had a choice, 90% of people would actively seek to avoid GMOs in their food.
What is Genetically Modified Food?
Genetically engineered or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are created by taking genes from organisms such as bacteria, viruses or animals and inserting them into other, often unrelated, species. Unlike traditional breeding, genetic engineering creates new organisms that would never occur in nature, creating new and unpredictable health and environmental risks. The term “genetically engineered (GE) food” refers to any product containing or derived from GMOs. In Canada, up to 70 per cent of the processed foods found in grocery stores contain GE ingredients. The most common GE ingredients come from crops like corn, soy, canola and cotton. Biotechnology companies like Monsanto genetically engineer these crops to produce a pesticide or to withstand the application of herbicides.
The Health and Environmental Risks of GMOs
The planting of GE crops on millions of hectares of land and their introduction into our food supply is a giant genetic experiment. As living, reproducing organisms, GMOs form a type of living pollution that can spread across vast areas creating environmental risks that are unprecedented and possibly irreversible. Health risks...
